Believe it or not, spring is right around the corner. We’ll say goodbye to the winter season (wait…. did we even have one?) and prepare for clear Texas skies and warmer temperatures. As we transition into this new season, it’s important to make sure your car is functioning properly and is ready to adapt to the new weather conditions. A quick check up can help expose any winter damage and allow you to perform the proper maintenance to prepare for summer conditions.
Tire Pressure: Cold weather can gravely reduce the pressure of your tires. It’s vital that you check the pressure levels to make sure that they are all properly inflated. Note: Your tire pressure will decrease about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit drop in the outside air temperature.
Windshield Wipers: The chances of rain increase during the springtime, so make sure that your windshield wipers are fully functioning. If there are any signs of wear and tear, be sure to replace the blades immediately.
Fluid Levels: It’s important to check all of your fluid levels on a regular basis, but some fluids require extra attention during this time. For instance, your antifreeze/coolant should be replenished, since you will be using your AC more frequently. Your brake fluid should also be restored due to the increased chances of rain during this time period. Remember, the cold weather can thicken your motor oil, so get that oil change scheduled right away!
Battery & Engine: Check under your hood to make sure that these central components are still running smoothly. The cold weather can create stress on these parts and make them work harder than usual, so be sure to test them out and replace if necessary.
Belts: Inspect your belts to make sure that there isn’t any damage. Cold weather can cause the belts to crack and split, which means that there’s a risk they may snap while you’re cruising around, once the temperature rises.
